Traditional "Gaff Rig" Sailing Skills

Learning sail-handling on Amelie RoseWhether you're thinking about buying a gaffer, want foundation skills to use aboard the Tallships, are a modern yacht skipper looking to add traditional skills to your CV or are just plain interested in how a rig from the 1850s works then our Traditional Boat Skills is the perfect course for you.


In this course we'll cover a wide range of techniques including:-


  • Rope Handling (including sweating/tailing, coiling, useful knots & splices, mooring lines) 
  • Sail Handling (including setting & recovering topsails, reefing techniques, launching & recovering flying jibs, furling and stowing)
  • Boat Handling under both engine and sail at sea and in harbour
  • Handling a traditional windlass (for anchoring and setting up the rig)
  • Managing Topmasts and Bowsprits (including dropping/reefing)
